- Arbutin.
Arbutin is an active substance existing in natural plant, bearberry, and has been used to treat and prevent skin pigmentation and
brighten the skin with its inhibition effects of tyrosinase activity. With the improvement of the technology and chemistry, Arbutin can be obtained by synthetic method these days. As far as alternatives go, there is nothing better than Alpha Arbutin In fact, the chemical properties in this chemical metabolize down to hydroquinone in your body which means that it could be a safer
alternative to the latter A-Arbutin and Hydroquinone work to reduce wrinkles and lighten the skin because they inhibit tyrosinase from catalyzing melanin, the
chemical in our body responsible for the creation of pigment. Other natural bleaching agents that do the same thing include bearberry and blueberry extract. Sure, they
are less strong than hydroquinone but the body reacts the same exact way with less side effects to boot.
Alpha Arbutin is not known as well as its other “arbutin” cousin, beta arbutin. But in recent tests, researchers have found that the
ingredients found in this “weed” is the most natural way to treat skin to make skin tone "even”, for reducing age spots and for overall skin bleaching. In fact, Alpha Arbutin
beat out all other natural methods such as glycolic acid and salicylic acid. And as far as other natural skin whitening herbal ingredients, A-A out performed them all.
Finally, when tests were done between AA and beta arbutin, A-arbutin was found to be over 20 times more effective than B-Arbutin.
So, what does this say?
While Alpha Arbutin is not as effective as hydroquinone, it is less risky and with fewer side effects. From an all-natural perspective,
it outperforms all other bleaching agents found organically including bearberry extract, licorice extract and even beta arbutin and benzoyl arbutin.
Alpha arbutin is very expensive. That is the one downside. . Expect to pay as much as 50,000 although there are some whitening beauty products online that contain smaller
traces of this bleaching ingredient for much less.
Alpha Arbutin:
Alpha-Arbutin is a biosynthetic active ingredient that is pure, water-soluble and is manufactured in a powder form. As one of the most advanced skin lightening
ingredients on the market, it has been shown to work effectively on all skin types. It is the epimer of arbutin, and research has
proven that it has a stronger inhibitory action than that of (beta) arbutin. Though it is a very expensive ingredient to manufacture, even at very low
concentrations, a-arbutin has shown to inhibit the activity of tyrosinase. Alpha Arbutin's inhibitory mechanism is different
from that of arbutin and can be up to 10 times more effective. The a-glucosidic bond found in alpha Arbutin offers higher stability
and efficancy than the B form found in the related Beta-Arbutin. This leads to a skin whitening active that acts faster and more efficiently than existing single components.
Arbutin is a glycoside ; a glycosylated hydroquinone extracted from the bearberry plant in the genus Arctostaphylos. It inhibits
tyrosinase and thus prevents the formation of melanin. Arbutin is therefore used as a skin-
lightening agent. Arbutin is found in wheat, and is concentrated in pear skins. It is also found in Bergenia crassifolia . Arbutin was also produced by an in vitro culture of
Schisandra chinensis .
Production
Pure arbutin can be prepared synthetically from the reaction of acetobromoglucose and
hydroquinone in the presence of alkali.
Folk medicine
Bearberry , which contains arbutin, is a traditional treatment for urinary tract infections.
Skin lightening agent
Bearberry extract is used in skin lightening treatments designed for long term and regular use. An active agent in brands of skin lightening preparations, it is more expensive than traditional skin lightening
ingredients like hydroquinone , which is now banned in many countries. In vitro studies of
human melanocytes exposed to arbutin at concentrations below 300 μg/mL reported decreased tyrosinase activity and content with little evidence of cytotoxicity.
Risks
Arbutin is glucosylated hydroquinone , and may carry similar cancer risks, although
there are also claims that arbutin reduces cancer risk. The German Institute of Food Research in Potsdam found that intestinal
bacteria can transform arbutin into
hydroquinone, which creates an environment favorable for intestinal cancer .
